VESTA
The Viticulture Enology Science and Technology Alliance (VESTA) is a NSF funded partnership between the Missouri State University system, two year schools in Iowa, Illinois, Oklahoma, state agriculture agencies, vineyards and wineries with a 21st Century vision for education in grape growing and winemaking. The goal of VESTA is to establish programs of study in viticulture and enology through collaborations with educational institutions, government and industry tailored specifically for the Mid-America region. A unique partnership of universities and community colleges in Missouri and neighboring states provides students access to coursework that is delivered online thereby enabling learning to occur anytime, anywhere. The VESTA website contains all the information needed to learn more about this innovative program and access many of the publically available materials.
VESTA VIN 148 Winery Sanitation
I'm pleased to be associated with this program as one of their distance instructors. My class, Winery Sanitation, is a course in the basic science and technology of winery sanitation. The course serves as an introduction to wine microbiology and covers all methods used for winery sanitation including premises, tanks, pumps, filters, oak barrels and sampling equipment, including but not limited to chemical agents, reagents, and thermal treatments leading to sterile bottling. Environmental issues and compliance are also addressed. Because the grant is federally funded, VESTA provides public access to much of the material. Videos available are located here:
